Afghan First Girl's Network

Meet the sisters
We are two sisters, Zohreh and Maryam. We are Afghan-British girls with a vision to empower Afghan girls and give them the opportunity to take a huge step into financial freedom. We aim to cover at least 25% of Afghanistan's population through our computer courses, digital literacy workshops and more.

It was a slow and painful moment when we watched Afghanistan fall apart last year. Millions of people displaced and dreams vanished. We were then horrified to hear that girls were banned from school, told how to dress and effectively labelled property. Since then 300+ days have passed! We wanted to do something but felt powerless, what can we do?
We wanted to harness our skills and knowledge to help girls in Afghanistan. We wanted to encourage them and give them the opportunity to learn and use their skills. We came to the UK as asylum seekers, with just the clothes on our backs and without knowing a word of English yet had a drive to learn and to excel. Now, we have both graduated University and feel education has been key in lifting us up from the poverty line and has given us a purpose.
The moment we found out girls were banned from attending an education setting, we decided to do something, we had seen the power of technology and we wanted to bring it to Afghanistan. Technology is not about expensive hardware and glass walls, it is about the minds behind it.

We know that the Education system in Afghanistan and other parts of the world are not set up to encourage girls. We also know it only takes one person to empower a girl, or a young women, with confidence to believe in herself and to be creative and have hope for a better future.
