AFGN was created as a result of the frustration and hopelessness from the current ban on female education imposed by the Taliban in Afghanistan - since August 2021! Our mission is deeply rooted in helping empower girls through access to educational material online to develop their skills set, improve their job opportunities, and the chance to break out of the cycles of poverty.

Why Afghan Girls desperately need our help?

Statistics show that Afghan is one of the most challenging places to be a woman, with the Taliban ban on girl's education the situation has deteriorated wiping the progress made in the past 20 years. Some facts below highlight the situation pre-taliban, the situation is more dire than ever.

In Afghanistan, the income of an average woman is less than 16% than of that of an average man, according to World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report 2021.

Women in Afghanistan are outnumbered five to one by men in sectors that require higher skills, according to 2021 data.

Prior to the Taliban takeover, Afghan women made up 4.1% of the country's senior and managerial positions, according to 2021 data. This has further dropped since the takeover by the Talibans.

As of 2017, women own and operate five in every 100 small businesses across the country.

Previously under the Afghan government, in parliament, just 27% of members are women, now it is below 5%.

Afghanistan comes bottom of 156 countries when it comes to measuring what economic opportunity is open to women against the options on offer to men.

In 2017, there were nearly seven girls for every 10 boys enrolled in primary school, dropping to six girls for every 10 boys enrolled in secondary school.

The female literacy rate in Afghanistan is just over 53%, compared with 79% worldwide.

We are Maryam and Zohreh Raoufi

We are British-Afghan sisters who were lucky enough to flee the first wave of the Talibans in the late 90's. Passionate about education and the opportunities it has bought us, we are deeply worried by the current ban on education and want to provide educational opportunities for girls so that they, too, can be in a position to pursue their dreams, empowered to make decisions independently and take their first step towards financial freedom.
